Migraine headaches are the most common type of headache, with an average of 25 million Americans suffering from them each year. Migraines are defined by a throbbing pain on one side of the head (usually behind one eye), often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

The causes of migraines are not fully understood but may include genetic predisposition, environmental factors (such as stress), or an inherent brain function that is triggered by certain situations.

Migraine headaches can be treated effectively with medications that relieve tension in the muscles around your neck or shoulders, as well as painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. These medications can be taken before symptoms start, during a migraine attack and after you’ve gone through it.

You should also avoid foods that trigger migraines: spicy foods like chili peppers, chocolate, coffee and red wine; citrus fruits like oranges and lemons; and alcohol because they can raise your blood pressure and make it more difficult for your brain to send out pain signals.
