The Pepsi promotion that almost beat Coke

In the 1990s there was the promotion of Pepsi that made them win the cola war with Coke but only for a short time. The promo is a daily raffle that can win a prizes from as low as 1 peso up to 1 million pesos ($20,000). The raffle number is printed under the bottle cap. That means buying Pepsi can give you a free chance of joining the raffle. The public was mesmerized that the sale of Pepsi surged. Their bottling plants were running 24/7 but the supply was still not enough.

The daily raffle is shown live on national tv. The video is pre-recorded so the high officials of Pepsi already know the result. Unfortunately there was a technical problem when the number 349 was announced as the winning number for the day. That number should be a non-winner because there are so many bottle caps with 349 that would amount to billions when redeemed. You can guess what happened next.

I think this is actually a very good business strategy but then Pepsi actually messed up by not actually doing their calculations right . A lot of businesses around here have actually employed this kind of marketing strategies but they normally use instant airtime as a way of the promo.
