Should the government make genotype testing compulsory?

We have got a lot of kids who are suffering from sickle cell anaemia which is a hereditary conditions that is as a result of two SS parents or an AS parent marrying another SS partner. This then leads to them giving birth to children (or just one of their children) who will be suffering with sickle cell anaemia.
Most of such kids are not living the best of their lives as they often fall sick and are also being discriminated against in some societies. Some of them even resort to loneliness to avoid being identified as sickle cell anaemic patients.

A major reason why this condition continue to linger is because most people do not go to test to know their genotype and they end up marrying someone who may be sickle celled or a carrier of the gene, this bringing up children with the condition too.

Do you think it is important for the government to make genotype testing compulsory?

Even AS and AS can still give birth to an SS child, which isn't a good look at all. That's just punishment of wasting of time entering into child bearing and losing the child cos of hereditary issue. The government should look into it, if its possible to run test for potential couples before going on settling down into child bearing. That will help to reduce sickle anaemia and also loss of early child death.

Genotype testing is very good. Some people are always afraid to get it done. But the truth is, it for our own good. When you know your genotype, you will know who to marry to avoid marring the wrong partner. If government want to make it compulsory for everyone, then they should make it free too.

I do not think it is an expensive test, though I still agree with you that it should be made Free since not everyone would be able to afford it even when the fee is subsidized to a very minimal rate.
People who refuse to do it are only causing trouble to themselves since they are the ones to suffer the consequences.

We have a family friend who got cancer and died. When we went to his wake we talked to the sister who was the only remaining family. Their parents both died of cancer and 3 of their siblings. Now the sister has breast cancer and has a few months to live. She said that it is due to the bad combination of the genes of their parents. With the testing it should be voluntary so it will be availed.

Sometimes marriage is not only done on the court law over here but people can still engage in traditional marriage and they still live together and have children. Even if the government made it compulsory for people to go for genotype test how will they make sure that this is done by every couple that is going into marriage ?

Considering the effects of people with unmatched marrying each other, compelling genotype check up should be encouraged. There are many offsprings that have been given birth to with sickle cell amneia making life unbearable for them.

The only problem with this is that there may be difficulty I'm enforcing the law if truly made. There are people that marry through their faith and believe that the religion they worship can do all things even if seem impossible.

Religion is not the only reason why this may seem impossible to implement, also there will be problem of money for young couples to carry out the test. There are some people that may not afford the money for testing no matter now small it is, government can however subsidise that to make it easier.

Also, there should be proper enlightenment about ti and young couples should not allow love to win over their reality. They should rather be cool as friends rather than marrying each other despite knowing they have unmatched genotype.
