I so much agree with your point about some farmers lacking knowledge which is why they are poor. In my state, you get to see a lot of farmers who never read books to understand what works or even listen to news to get update about weather forecast and this makes them to always make same mistakes year in, year out.This is the problem with the new generation because when they talk about farming, they don't consider it as a good source of income. The truth is, many farmers are living in poverty. I encountered this issue when I went on an immersion in a place where people's main source of income came from farming.
One reason I can see is the lack of knowledge on the people who work on the farm as a source of living. Second, the presence of some bad people or communists who causes threat to the people in the villages and third is the occurrence of calamities.
I would say that they are using trial and error to go about it, so they don't make significant profits.
