Before you open a 401(k), there are some questions you should ask.

First, ask your employer whether it offers a 401(k) plan. What's the name of it, if so? What does it price to take part? What proportion of workers may take part? Can you contribute before taxes are deducted from your paycheck? What is the annual limit that you may contribute? Do they offer any kind of loans or other services that might be useful in managing your money?

Then, figure out how long the firm has offered the plan and its performance history. Does it meet your goals for investing? Is it easy to understand and use? Is it managed by someone who understands how investments work and how they can help you reach your financial goals?

Then talk to people who have used the plan before and make sure they're happy with it! You don't want to join a plan that's going to make you miserable or waste time looking for answers when things go wrong.
