Diversity from my own definition is "getting from different sources". As it relates to organizational workforce, it means drawing your staff strength from a variety of sources. These sources could be gender, demography, age or even specialities and traits.

The default position of busines organizations is to have predefined criteria and yardsticks that they recruit. There are advantages of leaving these pre-set criteria to employ people with diverse even contradicting qualities.

There is a time in an organization where just technique is not enough to solve a problem but raw physical strength is needed, that's when the organization would wish they had staff that were not just technically sound but also physically strong. That's a practical example of where diversity in the workforce can be beneficial.
