You can avoid scammers by making a thorough research before dealing with anyone, there should always be background checks, if you do not know how to do it, you should hire someone to do it for you, especially if it is about finances, many people are online to make quick bucks out of naive people who cannot get themselves to investigate before they indulge.

There millions of articles online that deals with how to spot scams, you should go there and learn how to do it, even though they get smarter everyday but generally the approach is the same and the patterns are just reoccuring.
