Do We Really Need to Multitask to Perform Better in Jobs?

Do you know we are wired to de monotasking? Monotasking means doing one work at a time. Our brain is programmed to focus only on one task at one time, when we force our brain to focus on multiple tasks, we cannot become productive or creative. When we multitask, we cannot deliver the quality that we could have delivered while monotasking. The more we multitask, the less we achieve.

So, how do we perform better in jobs?

Focus on one task at a time and try to complete it as soon as possible.

Do not start working on the second project, without completing the first project.

If the project you are working on requires expertise in multiple areas, hire other people to work on the project even though you might have the skills. For instance, a web designer is also required to design a logo, header image, favicon, etc. You continue with designing while outsourcing a graphic designer to work on a logo, header image, etc.

Correct, I came to terms with this after reading Gary Keller's The One Thing(recommended read), it's just a modern phenomenon that we have to deal with sadly, we have job descriptions nowadays promoting multitasking, which is very wrong.

As human beings we perform excellently when we are involved in one task only, even though there are difference in tasks for example eating and watching can be done simultaneously because they don't require much efforts.

But tasks like typing and talking can be counter productive because these tasks require a lot of Mental space to be able to execute properly.

If we take this a bit higher, you'll see that many people are guilty of these problem, when it's comes to learning new skills for example, you'll find out some want to learn everything at the same time and due to this they'll end up not learning anything at all or knowing just bits of each of them but never attaining mastery in any.

Multitasking has proven to be counter productive several times, but due to other unforeseen factors we keep on doing it.

Focusing on one task is the optimal solution for doing an excellent job because it's only at that time you'll be able to pay attention to details.

Multitasking has become a buzzword of the 21st century. It's often assumed that we need to be able to multitask in order to perform well at work, but is this really true?

The answer is probably no; In fact, although we've been told for years that multitasking is an essential skill for success in today's workplace, and some people with high IQ really take advantage of this. Recent research suggests otherwise. The truth is that multitasking can actually make us less productive and less focused than if we just focused on one task at a time.

This is because when we try to do two things at once, whether it's working on two different projects or talking on the phone while checking email, we're actually only half-paying attention to either one of them. The other half of our brain is focused on switching between tasks and trying not to forget any details about either one. This makes it hard for us to be as accurate or efficient with either activity as if we'd just devoted ourselves fully to one thing at once.

In addition, multitasking can lead us down a dangerous path known as "attention residue," which occurs when you finish one task but still have some thoughts lingering from the other one that you were working on previously. These lingering thoughts will often distract you. Well some tasks can be done simultaneously by me, very well.

Yeah In reality we need to focus on one thing and gets it right before to the next thing. Even multitasking you would be mentally and physically drained in no time and the body can even shut down before you know it.

The truth of the matter is that focusing on one thing comes with a lot more benefits than multitasking. We might just illustrate how great it is to multitask. It will look like you can achieve a lot with multitasking but the truth you might be doing shabby jobs. But I'm not writing that multitasking is totally wrong but the truth is that concentrating with one thing at a time is a lot better.

With focusing on one thing you would really see what is lacking in a project and how you can fix it better. You would be able to see what isn't working and focusing more on what is working to complete everything smoothly

This is very true. Multitasking is not wired into the human brain. Some people brag that they can multitask, but they cannot really. You are wired to mono task and that is something that you should accept. Then it will be easier for you to deliver duties and become a better worker.

There is so much success in working on one project with so much focus until you finish it. It always comes back with great rewards. When you focus on one task, you give yourself so much time to concentrate and do the right thing. It even gets easier to identify mistakes and correct them early enough.

Let's look for example someone who does research and writing. Researching and writing are two different tasks that cannot be done together. You will have to research first before you start writing. But if you try to do both at once, you will find that you have written mixed up stuff.

If you have multiple tasks you have to do the following:
  • List all tasks to do in a notebook
  • Order tasks by priority
  • Split them during the week or month
So first you start by splitting these tasks into multiple small tasks
Otherwise, you will not work on anything or start and end by completing a small portion then you gave up.
