When you're running a business, you need to know your customers. You need to know what they want, how often they use your product or service and whether or not they need it in the first place. By keeping tabs on their behavior and responses, you can better understand their needs and better serve them.

For example, let's say you're selling coffee and you want to know how frequently people drink coffee at your establishment. The best way to find out is by asking your customers directly. If someone orders coffee and then leaves without drinking any of it, that means they probably don't drink coffee very often. That's valuable information for you as an owner of the coffee shop: You now know that majority of your customers don't drink coffee often, so maybe it's time for your weekly specials instead of only having one type of coffee available all the time.

If someone orders a latte and leaves without drinking any of it, on the other hand, that might mean that person only drinks lattes when he comes into the shop (which isn't very often). This is great information for you because now you know that majority of your customers don't drink lattes often — but at a particular period of time.

Yes indeed knowing your customers is very important. You need to know:

A. Their choice and preference. You must know exactly what they want and when you know that, you will make sure that you make it available. It is only what they prefer that they will purchase and when you are unable to know their choice, you cannot make it available

B. You also need to know your customers in order to build a cordial relationship between you and them. It is always good that people who interact on the basis of business are able to know each other better and enhance the business and personal relationship between you which helps maintaining peaceful transactions.

C. You need to know their obsessions and things they hate. If your customer hates a particular thing may be a habit or some pet which you have, it may interfere with your relationship and business but if you know them, you can enhance your relationship.
