I was due for surgery last Saturday to remove a cyst on my cheek. On the night before a check for electrolyte was done as required by the anesthesiologist who will put me under general anesthesia. Unfortunately my sodium was 15 points below normal so the surgery was postponed for another date. Low sodium can cause a problem with the anesthesia. There are cases that the patient wouldn’t wake up for that reason.
Little did I know that the mild diarrhea I was having would ruin the schedule. Frequent visit to the toilet tends to lower the sodium and potassium as those chemicals go with the excretion from the body’s system. Now I have to treat the diarrhea and show another clean bill of health before the surgery would be scheduled again.
