The top skills needed to be a graphic designer are:

Creativity. Graphic designers need to be creative, they have to be able to think outside of the box, and come up with new ways of doing things. This is not something that can be taught, it's something you either have or you don't.

Knowledge of software tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. If you want to design business cards or brochures, then you will need these programs.

A good understanding of various design principles including colour theory and layout. This is important because if you are not aware of how your designs should look then it will be obvious when they are poorly designed.

The ability to work well under pressure when deadlines need to be met. If you have never experienced tight deadlines then this may not seem like an important skill but in reality it is vital because time is money so if there is any element that can be improved then this should always be done first before anything else takes place on a project.

Graphic design is a very broad field, so it's hard to pin down exactly what kind of skills are needed. But here are some of the major ones:

An eye for detail. Graphic designers should be able to spot potential problems in their designs, and then fix them. It's easy to think that you've got a great design when you're working on it at home or on your laptop, but it can be much harder to see when something needs fixing in a physical copy.

A keen eye for color and contrast. Everyone's vision is different, so being able to work with multiple clients who have different preferences for color and detail is important. It also helps if you can use color harmonies and contrast ratios to create more engaging designs that will appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

An eye for proportion and balance, especially when it comes to typography. Good typography sets the tone for everything else in your design — if you don't have good type choices, then everything else will feel off-kilter and unbalanced too.

A good understanding of layout principles like grid systems, panels, etc.). Many designers use tools like Photoshop or InDesign (or other programs) these days, so familiarity with these tools.

Creativity
New and original ideas are continually being developed by graphic designers. They must use a lot of creativity to produce designs that are both attention-grabbing and convey the appropriate message.

Communication
The core of a graphic designer's job is communication because graphic design is visual communication. Graphic designers must connect with clients and colleagues in addition to conveying ideas through their designs. Designers occasionally need to justify a choice or decision to someone without a design expertise. For proposals and presentations, they will also require communication skills—both written and spoken.

Strategy
Graphic designers must think strategically since they must take into account how various design components interact together and how to effectively communicate meaning while upholding design standards. In order to do this, you must undertake market research, brainstorm, generate ideas, thumbnail designs, and evaluate them.

Problem solving
Consider a design brief as a client's problem: they need to communicate something, and the ideal design will help them.
