The most common procedures for removing kidney stones

In the olden days a patient with kidney stones had to undergo surgery. The kidney will be opened to remove the stones. It is not considered major operation but the recovery takes at least more than a week. In the years to come there was the stent that is like a hose that would stay with the patient for a month or 2 for the gradual removal of the bits and pieces of kidney stone.

My wife is lucky that when she was diagnosed of kidney stones the lithotripsy procedure was already here. It uses sound waves that shock the stones to break and crumble into small bits. With the help of diuretic (for urinating frequently) the bits of stones go out with the urine. It is a minor procedure with no confinement. The cost here of lithotripsy is $1,400 which can be covered by the health card.
