Cross staffing is a system where workers are being trained to function efficiently in spheres outside their primary job role in an organisation. For instance, a staff that was employed to be a marketer is trained intensively in server room management, customer support, administration and other aspects of the organisation. Could this kind of personnel management augur well for a business organisation? Let's check out.

1) Elimination of gaps in cases of emergency: When an organisation has cross trained staff, it can't be stranded in an emergency case of a staff suddenly resigning and absenteeism as another staff can stand in very well.

2) Stronger Collaboration and teamwork: Since almost all the staff are knowledgeable in all the aspects of the business operations, the staff can easily collaborate and work together to complete projects and tasks which leads to greater team work.

Do you think that cross staffing is a jack of all trades, master of none practice or it is ideal personnel management practice in business?

There are situations in which cross staffing can be a good management strategy for companies. Cross staffing means assigning employees from one department or area of expertise to work temporarily in another department or area. Below are some possible benefits of cross staffing:

1. Increased flexibility and adaptability: Cross staffing permits employees to gain experience performing various roles and responsibilities within the firm thereby creating a culture of flexibility and adaptability hence its personnel become more flexible and capable of handling diverse tasks. This helps the business to better respond to varying business needs and workload fluctuations.

2. Enhanced collaboration and communication: An individual working in different departments will get a deeper understanding about how various functions operate across the organization leading to better collaboration and communication within departments as well as breaking down silos thereby increasing overall teamwork that is essential for problem solving, innovation, and knowledge sharing.

When recruiting workers, we as the personnel department have determined qualifications, be it education, skills, experience, gender, age, etc. Cross staffing will be effective if it is only done in one department or division, for example in the accounting department there are various sections, cross staffing can be done such as the sales department becoming the purchasing department and vice versa. But if you implement cross staffing between departments that require very different background skills, your business can be disrupted or become bankrupt, for example the accounting division becomes a production and machine maintenance department.
