When you're just starting a job and given a new skill, whether it's learning to use a new software program or an entirely different trade (such as photography, accounting, or woodworking), it can seem like there's no way you'll be able to learn fast enough to get your work done.

While there are many approaches to learning a skill quickly, some of which are more effective than others, all of them can be divided into two larger groups: passive and active.

Active learning involves performing the skill through repetition, while passive learning involves studying in-depth information on the subject while avoiding direct application. Both methods have their merits, with active learning being more applicable in shorter periods and passive learning being more applicable in longer spans of time. Well, it still depends on which works for you best.

Here are some easy ways to take on new skills:

Break down the skill into smaller chunks. This way, it doesn't seem so overwhelming. For example, if you're asked to learn how to use Adobe After Effects, don't stress over the entire program in one sitting. Think of all the different parts of the program and focus on just one of them at a time. Start with the basics and only tackle one small section at a time. Even if you feel like you don't understand all of the details, remember that it will take time before you start feeling comfortable with the whole thing. If you're struggling with something that seems too hard for you, just look up some tutorials on YouTube and see if that can help, try to ask questions too.

Make sure you have enough time for practice. Sometimes when we're new at something we try to tackle more than we should.
