Diabetes: Causes and prevention

What is diabetes: Diabetes is a disease caused by too much sugar (glucose) in the blood. When there is abnormal level (high level) of sugar in the blood, a patient is said to be diabetic. Glucose is the main source of energy in the body, diabetes occurs when your body takes up less sugar supply from the blood to the cell thereby causing a high amount of sugar level in the blood.

What causes diabetes: when you eat food, the body breaks down the food eaten into different nutrients including sugar. Glucose is now down to your bloodstream and other parts of the body where it is needed. The pancreas then releases insulin into the bloodstream and acts as a medium through which glucose enter the body cell. Glucose is needed for energy and organs to work properly, any stop in the process can lead to the development of diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetes: The following are the symptoms associated with diabetes; weakness, feeling tired, often feels thirsty, blurry vision, frequent urination, dry mouth, numbness of the feet, weight loss, dry and itchy skin.

Prevention of diabetes:
1. Have a frequent check on your blood glucose level
2. Eat a dietary meal and avoid too much intake of sugar
3. Engage in exercise and aerobic activities
4. Have a frequent check on your blood pressure level
5. Try to reduce weightif you're overweight
