In the olden days a chef is merely a cook with class. But now a chef is someone professional like an engineer or a lawyer. There is respect in his title maybe because most of the known chefs in the Philippines have studied culinary course abroad. A friend's son who got a culinary diploma in Singapore is now the head chef of a big restaurant. He said that a chef earns big salary that can be compared to a bank manager. There are also chefs in the entertainment industry because they appear as themselves in some movies and in tv shows. In the internet I know that there are many chefs who are Influencers (those with 10,000 or more followers).

To be a chef, a high school diploma is needed by elite culinary schools. The training usually takes 3 to 6 months depending on the specialty that the student wants. For foreign dishes the style is to undergo training in the specific country. If you specialize in Japanese food then you learn it in Japan. As per my observation most of the popular chefs here are those who studied abroad. That means they are from the rich family who has contacts with hotels and classy restaurants.
