Globus sensation (also called globus pharyngeus, throat tension) is the feeling of having a lump in the throat or a tightness in the throat. The causes of globus sensation are unclear, but it is believed to be related to muscle spasms, inflammation and anxiety. Globus sensation is not dangerous, but it can be quite annoying. The treatment of globus sensation includes making lifestyle changes such as avoiding caffeine and refraining from smoking. Some doctors may prescribe medications such as antacids or anti anxiety drugs to treat globus sensation.

The cause of this is unknown. It affects up to 1 in 10 people at some point in their lives and may be more common in women and older people. Eating doesn't make it better or worse, and you don't feel like you need to cough or clear your throat. Globus sensation isn't dangerous, but we don't know exactly what causes it. One theory is that globus sensation happens when the muscles of the throat relax too much and press on the esophagus.
