One very good addition to this is penning down your budget. Like they say, 'the faintest pen is better than the sharpest brain'. Many only keep a mental budget, i.e, they just have in their mind what they want to buy and the limit of their expenses. However, the discipline to adhere to the budget begins with the discipline to write it down.
Secondly, I think we need to ask ourselves the need for a budget in the first place. It is often said that when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable, hence, is the need to really understand the need for a budget.
In Economics, it is often said that man's wants are endless and the resources to satisfy these wants are limited. Hence is the need for a budget. To maximize the limited resources in achieving one's desired satisfaction. Since their are limited resources to satisfy these numerous want, there is the need to draw a scale of preference. That is, arranging these desire according to their priorities. It is often said that 'people buy what they don't need, with the money they don't have, to impress the people they don't like'. That is very apt. Budget will make one sieve between what he wants and what he needs.
