Kidney stones are hard crystals that form inside the kidneys. They're caused by toxins and minerals in the urine becoming concentrated. This process is called urolithiasis, which is another name for kidney stones.

It's important to note that kidney stones can be caused by three different things: dehydration, urinary tract infections, and genetic disorders. Dehydration is an extremely common cause of kidney stones. Drinking too little water can increase your risk of urinating less frequently, which leads to more concentrated urine in the body and thus more kidney stones.

Urinary tract infections are also a major cause of kidney stones, as they cause inflammation in the urinary tract, which again leads to more concentrated urine in the body. Finally, certain genetic disorders can make you more likely to develop them.

Let me share the story of the former staff of my wife who has kidney stones at present. In January she had undergone a laser treatment. From what I know the shock wave treatment called Lithotripsy is the best so why laser? She said that her doctor thought that laser is the best for her case. Well, the laser treatment was done and the stone was still there. A stent was attached to her to help in the preparation of another laser session. But she moved to another doctor. This month of February she underwent shock wave session. Unfortunately the stone was not shattered. Now that makes me wonder why the stone is so hard. She is now being studied by another doctor and this time the plan is for her to go under the knife. A surgery to remove the big stone of 1.4 cm in size can only be removed by an operation.

Your kidney's primary function is to filter waste and excess fluid from your blood. Kidney stones are hard, pebble-like fragments consisting of minerals and salt that form when there is too much waste.
While some people are genetically susceptible to kidney stones, other circumstances make them more likely to occur. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Disease(NIDKK),they include not drinking enough water and consuming a diet heavy in sodium and animal protein.

What is kidney stone?

A kidney stone is a hard, pebble-like deposit that can form in your kidney. Kidney stones can develop when concentrated minerals accumulate in your urine.

Causes

There are three major causes of kidney stones in the body.

The first is dehydration. When your body is dehydrated, your urine becomes more concentrated and minerals can crystallize.

The second is diet. A diet high in animal protein, sodium, and sugar can increase your risk of developing kidney stones.

The third is genetics. If you have a family history of kidney stones, you may be more likely to develop them.

Prevention

There are several things you can do to prevent kidney stones from developing.

First, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, every day.

Second, eat a healthy diet. Limit animal protein, salt, and sugar. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Third, talk to your doctor. If you have a family history of kidney stones, your doctor may recommend medications or other treatments to prevent them.
