A utility staff in an organization doesn't have a defined job role. They do anything and everything. Their work is to ensure that things in an organization is working well. They are the ones to ensure the lights are working, the water is flowing and all other operational covers are met. Being a utility staff can be quite complex based on a few factors listed below:

1) Never Ending Demands: Utility staff are always working without rest because there must be something that needs fixing in the organisation.

2) Chances of Always Being Physically tired: The work of utility staff are always physical most of the times and they get physically exhausted almost every time.

3) Safety Concerns: Most utility staff always do tasks that they are not properly trained for. Some take electrical and engineering tasks which are highly specialized. This raises safety concerns.

The worst part of everything is that these utility staff may not be given the due recognition they deserve for their efforts. That is if they are even paid good salaries for all the work they do. They are the ones that hold business organizations together. Most of them even know the company more than the owner.

Any organization that has such a staff would be very foolish not to treasure him or her. It is when they leave that they feel the void and start begging the utility staff to come back. I always respect all the Capacity Staff as utility staff are informally called in my country.
