Pneumonia is an infection in one or both lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The signs and symptoms of pneumonia vary from mild to severe, depending on factors such as the type of germ causing the infection, and your age and overall health.
The symptoms of pneumonia can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours, or they may come on more slowly over several days.

Bacterial pneumonia can affect all ages, but you are at greater risk if you abuse alcohol, smoke cigarettes, are debilitated, have recently had surgery, have a respiratory disease or viral infection, or have a weakened immune system. There are other types of pneumonia, there's also virus pneumonia.

Both the young and the old are at risk. Young children and older adults (over age 65) are at the highest risk of getting pneumonia, and of having complications from it.

Pneumonia can be spread from person to person, but it can also be caused by some other factors.

The signs and symptoms of pneumonia may include:

Sharp or stabbing chest pain that gets worse when you breathe deeply or cough,
Nausea and vomiting, especially in small children,
Loss of appetite,
Confused mental state or changes in awareness (especially in older adults), Muscle pain, sore throat.
