Project managers and work breakdown

Project managers frequently utilize the work breakdown structure (WBS) to plan and oversee their projects. The purpose of the tool is to help break down the work that has to be done on a project into smaller, more manageable chunks. The WBS can be used individually to manage every component of your project, or it can be used in conjunction with other project management tools like Gantt charts and network diagrams.

Here are some suggestions on how to utilize the WBS if you are in charge of a small business or home repair project:

• List all steps required to complete the current task. These could involve things like making purchases for supplies, putting together tools and equipment, and tidying up after yourself. • List all steps required to complete the current task. These could involve activities like buying supplies, putting together tools and equipment, cleaning up etc. It helps you decide how much time is needed for each group to finish their tasks and when each task should start and finish.

• Assign team members or subcontractors to each category of tasks using the selection criteria of their strengths and shortcomings (i.e., if someone is good at carpentry but not so good at painting).

• Group these jobs according to how much time each one will require.
