Cholesterol is a fatty substance that plays a role in many of your body's functions. Too much cholesterol causes heart disease and increases the risk of stroke.

There are no symptoms of high cholesterol. The only way to know if you have high cholesterol is to get tested. In fact, more than half of adults with high cholesterol don't know it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

You should get your cholesterol levels checked at least once every five years, according to the American Heart Association. You may need to be tested more often if you have high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), low HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), high triglycerides (fat found in the blood), or any of these risk factors:

-Diabetes

-High blood pressure

-Smoking

-Overweight or obese

-Family history of heart disease.
