Namecoin is the first Altcoin that was launched in 2011 by Vincent Durham, this was the result of the attempt to find the decentralised namespace against centralised DNS, just like Bitcoin to become the decentralised currency.

Namecoin remained a popular space to get domains and mine cryptocurrency, however mining namecoin was less popular due to Bitcoin's value was high and they both were into merged mining, so miners choose Bitcoin over namecoin. Namespace was also less used by people, only few registered domain names remained active, Domain names were not made to remain with founder and founder have to be purchase it again after some time, so they find no benefit in it.

As a cryptocurrency, Namecoin got many competitors, and it went out of competition too after Ethereum was launched as a different blockchain. However, Namecoin is not out of market, it is still available to mine and to trade.
