Cleanliness is of first importance in preventing infection and helping wounds yo heal.

A surface scrape ( or abrasion) of this skin, which is recent and clean, may be allowed to dry in the air.

To Treat a wound:

First wash your hands with soap and water. Then wash the abrasion gently, and dry it. That may be all it needs. If you have some gentian violet solution ( GV) dab on a little to help keep it clean, and dry More quickly. Do not put on a dressing especially when the abrasion is on the face. It will heal better without.

Some people like to dab on Tincture Benzoin Co ( TBC), with cotton wool swabs left sticking to the abrasion. This is not good treatment. The spirit ( alcohol) in the TBC makes it very painful and delays healing.

GV, no dressing , and allowing the wound to dry in the air, is much better.

To treat a deeper , dirty wound:
Wash your hands very well with soap and water.
Then wash the skin around the wound with soap and cool boiled water. Now wash the wound well with cool, boiled water ( and soap, if the wound had a lot of dirt in it(.
When cleaning the wound d, be careful to clean out all the dirt. Lift up and clean tweezers or other instruments to remove bits of dirt, but always boil them first yo be sure they are sterile.

CAUTION:
Never put mud on a wound . These can caused dangerous infections , such as tetanus.
Never put alcohol, tincture of iodine, or Merthiolate directly into wound ; doing so will only damage the flesh and make healing slower. Instead use soap and water.
