You can buy a price of land or even a housing property and be hoping to sell it wen the price increases. Though this is like a gambling because the price may not go up.
Other ways include pooling resources together with some people and buy a parcel of land, renovate it and make it an estate where people will later be buying from it.

I will have to refute with the statement "investing in real estate is like gambling." There is a big difference between gambling and investment. When you are investing, there is no guarantee that you will earn profits, but the chances of earning profits from investment is higher than earning from gambling. If you invest in properties with commercial value and if you you re financially capable to hold your investment for a couple of years, you will surely profit from real estate investment.
