Salesmen change jobs the most, because their skills are transferrable, if you're a sales man selling cars it's easier for you to jump into selling wrist watches because you already have the requisite knowledge of selling, most of what you'll learn will hover around domain expertise and some industry lingo.

Changing an industry might be due for personal reasons, it might be because you don't have passion anymore in the current industry or you sales have dried up, depending on what you're current ly facing, you can make the transition by testing the waters, get an internship and see if it's something you want to do before quitting.

Another important factor to consider is the commission, some industries have higher commission than others

It is not as easy as the original poster rightly puts it here to change sales jobs. If it is not a related field, you might easily end up being a wanderer trying to establish yourself in that industry. Techniques to make sales could be worlds apart accross different industries. Selling a car is not the same thing as selling a watch.

You would have to start studying car specs across different brands and models to be able to sell cars. I am of the opinion that it would take more than a year to make headway switching between selling the two products. It is just not about studying lingo.
