I find that reading a lot is one thing that helps me to write well too. This will help you to understand words and how they are used, the meanings and context, and ways you can use similar or different words to change the feeling behind a particular sentence. For example, if you want to apologize and you simply say "sorry". That's will sound insincere.

However, if you use words such as 'I apologize for what I did", or even "I'm very sorry", it's way better.

It's important to read leisurely too, both on topics related to what you wrote about and others. You never know when that knowledge will come in handy.
