How does email marketing works

I just got to know about email marketing and how it could help in generating free traffic thou not entirely free but you only have to pay once.In email marketing I heard you would be paid for a newbie about $0.5 to $1 per email list so imagine you with a thousand list.I would like you guys to enlighten me more on it.who ever got any thing to say feel free to comment.expecting lot of comment and am eager to learn from all of you
