A real estate agent is a person who is paid to help people buy, sell, or rent homes. They typically work as a salesperson and earn commissions on the property they're selling. Aspiring real estate agents must be licensed by their state in order to legally sell property, including houses, condo units, and land. If you have a bachelor's degree or are currently enrolled at least half-time in college with an interest in the field of real estate or purchasing real estate for your own use; you might be able to pursue an agent license without first becoming a licensed agent — but there will be some stipulations that may come with it. For example, you must be at least 21 years of age before you can even take the real estate agent licensing exam. You will also have to have your own office or a specific area in which you will conduct business, as well as paperwork that proves you're sole responsible for the business.
There are two ways to become an agent: You can apply on your own, which requires a minimum of $31,000 in net worth, and three years of real estate experience. You can also become a licensed broker, which requires a minimum of $40,000 in net worth and four years of experience. Applicants without the required real estate experience must first study the material necessary to pass the exam requirement before they take it.
