Genetic Disorders: Can They Be Cured?

Sometimes things go wrong in our bodies during the production of DNA, and this leads to genetic disorders which can have both physical and mental effects.

Some of the most common ones are sickle cell disease, albinism, Downs syndrome, autism, fragileX syndrome, Turners syndrome or haemophilia.

Since the problem is in the genes, it's not possible yet to completely cure genetic disorders. There are measures that can be taken depending on the specific disease to reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life.

One of the most important things we should understand about such people is that they need a lot of support, as they tend to get bullied or turned into outcasts. This is more prevalent in developing countries or families and communities that have strong cultural and religious beliefs that don't understand these conditions. It's common to see children abandoned and called 'witches'.

With the right care and a lot of love, they can live relatively normal lives too.

The short answer is: it depends on the disorder. Some genetic disorders are incurable. These include Huntington's disease and cystic fibrosis, which are caused by single-gene mutations passed down from parents to children. Other disorders, like Down syndrome and Tay-Sachs disease, are caused by mutations in multiple genes that result in an increased risk of developing the disorder.

Genetically speaking, we all have a genetic code. This code is what makes us who we are. Some people have more of certain genes than others, and the degree to which you have a particular gene determines how likely you are to develop a particular disorder. If one person has a recessive gene for depression and another has the same recessive gene but doesn't have depression then it's likely that if one were to inherit the depression gene from both parents they would also get depressed.

Genetic disorders can be cured through surgery or medication, but not always. Some disorders are hereditary and cannot be cured. Other disorders are caused by environmental factors or can be treated with medication.
