Does a business need to relate with top politicians and politics?

I always say that business and politics are two interwoven sectors and any serious business that wants to grow big must strategically be active in the political arena. A business must not come out to declare support for any politician but a business needs to develop relationships with politicians because they control the economy. Here are some reasons why business organisations should build relationships with politicians.

1) To influence government policy to their favour: A business that is close to the political and governmental arena can influence government to make policies that would favour them to maximise profitability. That's how some businesses get monopoly rights in industries.

2) Access to markets and government contract opportunities: When a business is close to the political scene, it can easily be awarded a government contract and we know they are always very lucrative.

3) Early warning on unfavorable government policies: If government wants to take harsh policies regarding a sector, the businesses in that sector that are close to the political scene would be informed before hand so they can prepare and probably exit.

It's all depends on the nature and the kind of business that we are talking about in this situation. Some businesses obviously need bigger and prestigious individuals for the business itself to grow and to develop or to be known and recognized among individuals. For example if an individual establish a business that deals on the selling of crude oil or they production of limestone into cement and other finish products. Of course businesses like this we would need bigger and deeper connection for such business to be recognized and to grow and develop and that of course mean liaising with politicians and businessman who have become prosper in such line of business.

Politics is a dirty game, but if you get couple if contacts there, it's a big deal, just that you would have to play dirty sometimes, nothing comes for free there, yes you would get some contracts awarded to you, but at some point you would have to be of help. If you can cope with the hurdles that come with it, getting connection there would really help your business greatly in terms of Fame, wealth and many more. So many will take the opportunity no matter the cost.
