Introduction to Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion is a type of surgery in which vertebrae are joined together so that they can no longer move independently. It is a very common procedure, and is sometimes used to treat degenerative disc disorder, scoliosis, and fractures of the spine. The surgeon will join the vertebrae with either metal plates and screws or rods.

Spinal fusion surgery is a surgical procedure used to correct problems with the bones of the spine (vertebrae). During this procedure, a surgeon places bone or a bonelike material within the space between two spinal vertebrae. This promotes the growth of new bone, which links the two vertebrae together.

Spinal fusion is generally performed to improve pain and stability in the spine. It may be done as part of treatment for several conditions that affect the bones and tissues of the spine. In many cases, spinal fusion is done along with another procedure, such as a discectomy or laminectomy.

Fusion can be performed in several different ways, depending on the reason for it: anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF), extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF), and others. Each technique has its own risks and benefits.
