Business intelligence and data mining are two terms that seem to be used interchangeably. In truth, they are two distinct areas of business intelligence (BI) that have different purposes and goals.

Business intelligence is the process of using information and technology to create valuable products and services for customers. Business intelligence tools help organizations by providing them with the information they need to make decisions about their businesses. This data can be gleaned from internal sources such as customer records or sales reports, or it can be obtained from external sources including government agencies, vendors and other companies in the same industry or market as yours.

Data mining is the process of searching through large databases to find patterns or anomalies that might suggest new ideas for products or services. Data mining helps organizations develop new ideas by identifying trends in customer behavior that indicate a need for a new product or service offering.
