First, the mission of an intelligence department is to provide policymakers with accurate and timely information, which can be used to make decisions. In other words, the intelligence department is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information from a variety of sources to aid policymaking.

Second, an intelligence department must be able to gather information about all relevant issues that affect business policy. This includes domestic issues such as crime, health care, and education; international issues such as terrorism, weapons proliferation, and international trade; and issues related to national and business security such as economics and military affairs.

Thirdly, an intelligence department must be able to collect reliable data on a broad range of topics from all possible sources and methods. In addition to traditional open sources such as newspapers and books that are available to most people everywhere in the world at any time of day or night; there are many other sources such as video news releases (VNRs) on television stations that are not available to most people anywhere in the world at any time; there are also historical records from newspapers that were published long ago but still exist today; there are also records kept by other businesses themselves about their own activities which may be kept in secret archives or even hidden away in vaults away from prying eyes.
