You may have heard that the fragrances in your skincare products are bad for you. Even if you know these fragrances are actually derived from botanical sources, you might still be hesitant to use them. But what's the real deal? Should we really be avoiding fragrances at all costs?

According to a report from The National Toxicology Program, "the overwhelming majority of ingredients used in fragrance are perfectly safe." The report further states that, "Even though some individual chemicals in the fragrance mixture can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation, the fragrance mixture itself rarely causes skin sensitization." So how do these fragrances get such a bad rep? It's all about context. If you're buying a new skincare product, it should always state on the label whether or not it contains a fragrance. This allow you to decide whether or not or now no longer to shop for it and apply it to your skin.
And if you're particularly sensitive to scents, this will likely help you avoid products containing fragrances altogether.
