A Guide to Crafting a Mission Statement.

When trying to define a mission statement, many companies find themselves stuck in the “Mission Impossible” cycle. They can’t quite put their finger on what they want to accomplish, and so they keep trying until they inevitably fail.

There are a few simple steps you can take when crafting your mission statement that will make it easier for you to get it right the first time:

1. Make sure that your mission statement is clear and concise. You don’t want to write a novel here. You want to be able to fit your entire mission into one sentence or less.

2. Make sure that your mission statement is specific enough that someone else could understand it without having any context beforehand. For example, a good mission statement might be “To provide fresh produce at a low cost for everyone in our community,” while an unclear one might say something like “We hope people eat well by having access to affordable food options year-round.” Both of these statements are saying essentially the same thing, but one is clear and understandable while the other isn’t as easy for someone else to process.

3. Make sure that anyone who reads it knows what you are trying to communicate.
