WHY YOU CAN'T JUST MARRY ANYBODY AS A CHRISTIAN
2corinthians 6:14, Genesis 2:18

Marriage is a sacred institution created by God himself, and it is meant to be a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman. As Christians, we should take this commitment seriously and choose our life partners wisely. In the book of Genesis, God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him" (Genesis 2:18). From this, we can see that marriage is not just a human invention, but rather a divine plan for mankind.

However, as much as marriage is a beautiful thing, it is not something that we should just rush into without seeking God's guidance. We cannot just marry anybody we feel attracted to or anybody who looks good on paper. Marrying the wrong person can have serious repercussions on our lives, our faith, and our destiny.

The Bible provides guidance on what kind of person we should marry and why we should not just marry anybody.

The Bible instructs us that we should marry someone who shares our faith. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” It is important to build a strong foundation on God in our relationship with our spouse. Marrying someone who does not share our faith can lead to conflicts and disagreements over important issues such as the raising of children, attending church, and moral values.

The word of God tells us to marry someone who is compatible with us. Genesis 2:18 says, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” God created us with unique personalities, interests, and needs. It is important to find someone who complements us in these areas. Marrying someone who is completely opposite to us can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings.

The Bible warns us against marrying someone who has a different lifestyle. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.” Marrying someone who engages in sinful activities can lead us away from God and harm our relationship with Him.

The Bible teaches us that marriage is a covenant before God, and it is meant to be a reflection of Christ’s love for the Church. Ephesians 5:25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Marrying someone who does not have a desire to grow in their relationship with God and their spouse can lead to a loveless and unfulfilling marriage.

In the Bible, we can find various examples of people who failed to fulfill God's plan for them because they married wrongly.

Let's look at some of Them:

1. SAMSON - In Judges 14, Samson desired a Philistine woman as his wife, despite God's command for Israel to not intermarry with the Philistines. This ultimately led to Samson's downfall and death.

2. SOLOMON - Despite being the wisest man on earth, Solomon married many foreign women, which went against God's command for kings to not multiply wives for themselves. His wives turned his heart away from God towards idols, leading to division in the kingdom after his death.

3. AHAB - King Ahab, who ruled Israel in the 9th century BCE, married Jezebel, a woman who worshipped Baal and led him to do the same. His marriage to Jezebel brought disaster upon Israel, as they worshipped false gods and turned away from the Lord.

4. HOSEA - God called the prophet Hosea to marry a prostitute named Gomer, as an illustration of God's love for Israel despite their unfaithfulness. Gomer's unfaithfulness towards Hosea caused great pain, but God used it to demonstrate His love for His people.

5. JACOB - Jacob married Leah and Rachel, but he loved Rachel more than Leah. This led to jealousy and strife between the two sisters. Additionally, Jacob had children with both their handmaids, which caused confusion and tension within the family.

6. DAVID - King David's marriage to Bathsheba began with him committing adultery and murder. This act of disobedience towards God brought consequence upon David's family and caused strife within the kingdom.
Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions we will make as Christians. We should not just marry anybody, but seek God’s guidance in finding someone who shares our faith, complements us, has similar values and lifestyle, and is committed to growing in their relationship with God and us. Let us pray that God will guide us as we seek to honor Him in our relationships and marriages. Amen.
