The launch of Ethereum 2.0 began on December 1, 2020, with the deployment of the Beacon Chain, which is the first phase of the upgrade. This phase introduced Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus to Ethereum, which is a significant change from the current Proof of Work (PoW) consensus.

The full implementation of Ethereum 2.0 will take place in multiple phases, and the exact timeline for each phase is not yet known. However, the Ethereum development team is working diligently to complete the next phases of the upgrade as soon as possible.

It's worth noting that the transition to Ethereum 2.0 will be gradual, and the current Ethereum mainnet will continue to operate alongside the new Ethereum 2.0 network for some time. This means that there will not be a sudden switch to Ethereum 2.0, and users and developers will have plenty of time to adjust to the new network.

After ethereum 2.0 happened, the Ethereum blockchain became environmentally friendly or known as the Green blockchain, the change from PoW to PoS meant that the rewards given to validators were smaller than those received by Ether miners, as well as reduced issuance of new Ethereum. But unfortunately until now there has been no significant decrease in transaction gas.
