A dangerous cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding the lungs, heart, and abdominal cavity is called mesothelioma. It is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with an average survival rate of just 5-10 years after diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is brought on by asbestos or rock dust exposure by breathing. In addition to being a deadly form of cancer, it also causes other severe medical conditions such as heart disease, emphysema, lung damage, and paralysis.

Mesothelioma can be detected in about 70% of people who develop it. It typically develops slowly over 10-20 years after exposure to asbestos fibers or rock dust. The average age at diagnosis is between 60-70 years old (although this varies greatly depending on many factors including where you live).

There are currently no FDA-approved treatments for mesothelioma; however there are some promising new therapies under development that may help patients survive longer than they would without these treatments.
