1. Get involved with events. When you attend events, you meet people who can help you with your career. If you want to show more leadership, start and organize your own even series as an excuse to meet key executives and other influential speakers.you could also offer yourself up for local and national meetups.
2. Start and maintain a blog. Blogging not only increases your visibility in your field , but it also lets you build a body of knowledge that you can grow from.
3. Keep a networking log. When you meet someone new, take special note of your contact's interests and achievements.
4. Turn down job offers. You should always look for new opportunities, even when you are happy with your job. Apply for jobs that you are unsure of and use the subsequent interviews as an opportunity to practise. You will learn what your current market value is and free to make a choice based on whether the opportunity is a good fit and not because you have no other choice.

Nice thread. This is a must read for every one who have spent atleast 5 years in the corporate world. The importance of trends and changes cannot be overemphasised. One thing I have noticed about many professionals is their reluctance to invest monetarily in their career. Many people still find it absurd to pay for CV clinics and rewriting or attending seminars and workshops on workplace etiquette, performance and excellence.

An adaage Say's a close mouth is a close destiny so therefore once you know that you need help try to let people know so that they will render you help.
Try to be attending any symposium that can help your carrier and never see your self as an inland of knowledge so that you will be able to see somebody that will help you.

We know that the path to your dream job is a bit intimidating. It's a long road, full of opportunities and challenges—and it can be hard to know where to start. Here are three ways to advance in your career:

1. Invest in yourself. If you want to move up the ladder, you have to do whatever it takes: take classes, get certified, volunteer for something that interests you, etc. There are no shortcuts, but there are ways to make sure that if you put in the work, you'll get the results you want.

2. Don't be afraid of failure! Failure is one of the best ways to learn about yourself and figure out what works for YOU—so don't be afraid of it! Failures can help us grow as people and give us valuable insights into our own strengths and weaknesses (which may or may not be what we think they are).

3. Be honest with yourself about what kind of work environment would be most beneficial for your career path and personal growth needs! No one knows what they need better than themselves—so don't hesitate to try new things.

The OP seems to have missed the most important thing related to advancing your career. If you want to advance in your career, the most important thing you need to consider is learning new skills and building knowledge. If you are only a high school graduate, you can advance in your career only when you are a graduate, therefore, you should enroll in a college and get a bachelor's degree. If you are already a graduate, you need to enroll in a master's program. If you have already completed university courses, you should try to enroll in other courses that might be helpful in your career. If going to a college or university is not possible, you should enroll in short-term courses for building skills. Learning is very important to advance your career. The second important thing is building connections. You need to build relationships with who is who in the industry.

By the experience being specialized in something is better from trying this and this and learning a little from everything then you will not acquire any personal competance, for each one his speciality in this world.
