A do not follow link can be added using the disavow link tool. Do not follow links are practically useless because Google will not follow them. Although it is essentially certain that these connections won't be counted, Google is being a little extra cautious in this case to prevent webmasters from unintentionally disavowing ALL of their own links.

WAY TO REMOVE OBJECTIVE LINKS:

Try other approaches first, even though Google doesn't have the means to disavow links. Therefore, first attempt the traditional technique by writing to any link providers to have them removed, then if that doesn't work, try the Disavow Links function in Webmaster Tools.

Matt recommends using the disavow tool.

The disavow tool, according to Matt, can be used for negative SEO as well as poor links. Webmasters may now use the program and return to collecting links from trustworthy domains rather than wasting their time worrying about the links that have been introduced to their site using unethical SEO practices. This tool is also useful when you can't contact a person to ask them to take down a link to your website since they are either ignoring your emails or you are unable to reach them.

At a recent industry conference, the chief of Google's online spam team gave a speech and explained what the new Disavow Tool actually does.
