Selling Online: Etsy Vs Amazon

Amazon and Etsy both are wonderful ecommerce marketplaces for small and medium businesses or even individuals to sell products online and make money.

On Amazon, you can sell a lot of things from physical items, to digital products, and print on demand products. Likewise on Etsy also you can sell physical products, digital products or print on demand products.

If you want to sell physical products on Amazon, you will have to send your products to Amazon warehouse, whereas on Etsy, you can sell physical products only if it is more than 20 years old or your product is hand crafted.

Selling physical products on Amazon is not available everywhere as you need Amazon warehouse in your country, however, you can sell physical products through Etsy no matter where you are based.

Amazon charges you $0.99 per sale for individual plan and $39.99 for a business plan that allows you to sell unlimited products. Etsy charges 20 cents to list a product and 6.5 percent commission after the sale.

The truth is that both platforms are legit and very well-known around the world so there are many chances to make sales if you list your items there. If you check number of registered users, organic traffic and market coverage Amazon is definitely a better platform than Etsy. However, when it comes to selling, you will find Etsy far easier than Amazon. When I say easy, I not only mean the process involved with selling but also the changes of selling. On Etsy, people buy hand crafted items and personalized items. On Amazon you buy commercially produced items. Amazon has more buyers but this does not the moment you list your item on Amazon buyers will flock to your store to place an order. You will still have to market, run ads, etc. You also need better products to generate sales. Since Amazon is a bigger marketplace, competition is also high. Your biggest competitors are the big sellers and businesses, however, on Etsy, there are small sellers and you can easily beat these sellers and generate sales. Etsy SEO is also relatively simple, you just need keywords and a proper niche.
