Companies like Apple, Samsung can spend billions of dollars in marketing campaign, however, for small and medium businesses, spending a lot of money in marketing might not be financially sustainable. Even if these businesses are running ads, paid marketing campaigns should not be used to drive sales because profit margins will be low if the sales are generate through advertisements (you will have to add your advertising cost to the product selling price). In some cases, these business might even be spending more money on advertisements than they are actually making from sales.

Therefore, small businesses need to focus on free marketing methods like social media. In order to benefit from social media marketing, you need followers. Instead of running ads for your business, spend money to build followers on your social pages like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

When you run advertisements for your page, you will reach your target audience and they might like and follow you. You can then start promoting for free.

If you want to do paid marketing, you have two options, either to spend $100 on an Adword campaign or even Facebook ads and try to generate sales. Or, spend $100 to advertise your Facebook page and build followers (I am giving Adword and Facebook, just for example). When you run ads for your product, you will generate sales, once your advert budget is consumed, sales will stop, and you will have to run ads again to generate more sales. However, when you advertise your page and build followers, you can do free promotion on your page and generate sales (because you have built audience). The problem with paid ads is you need to run them again and again to generate sales, however, if you built an audience you can promote to your audience and still generate sales without having to spend extra money on ads. Therefore, in order to sell is to build an audience.

There is a reason why SEO and organic traffic is rated as high as it is now. It is because in the long run, that is what will keep you going with the least expenses.

A lot of newbies fall for the marketing trap, spending money on ads that are poorly crafted and targeted, again and again with the hopes of making it big at once. I fell for this too. I ran Facebook ads on my own with no clear marketing goal or audience. The feeling that everyone is your audience is very true and is one of the most crippling mistakes in ads.

This does not mean you should never spend on ads though. You first try to create content, promote it organically and see what works best. This is what you promote with paid ads. Even then, you want to test different ways of advertising the same thing to see if you can get better results.
