You can make money from a self-hosted blog: It is quite impossible to make money from free-hosted blog, a lot of ad networks do not even accept free blogs. For example, you can create free blogs with wordpress, wix, etc. However, adsense will not accept these sites for monetization.

You own your self-hosted blog: When you have a free hosted blog, you do not have full control, your blog can be shut down by the platform at any time. However, when you have a self-hosted blog, you have full ownership, including website files and content you have published.

Free hosting can be good only for people who are starting for the first time. Free hosting will allow you to learn about blogging without having to spend any money on domain and hosting. Once you have mastered SEO and digital marketing, you can easily move to paid option. I do not see any wrong in using free hoisted blog, especially if you are trying blogging for the first time. When you try blogging you will find that it is very difficult to generate income even when you work for the entire year, so you will be spending money from your pocket to maintain the blog, free hosted blogging will allow to learn blogging without having to spend any money. The only draw back I see for free hosted blog is when you move to paid optin all the work related to marketing and SE has to be done from the beginning
