Pet-friendly properties are more popular than ever, with an estimated 30% of Americans owning at least one pet. But can you allow pets in your rental property? The answer depends on where it is located and what kind of pet you're talking about.

Pets have been allowed in some form since ancient times, when they were used for hunting and protection. But many landlords have banned pets for fear that they'll damage their rental property or lead to disputes with other tenants. Is it worth allowing animals inside your rental units? If so, what kind of pets should you allow?

The good news is that there are plenty of options for pet-friendly properties — from single-family homes to duplexes and high-rise apartments — so even if you have a no-pets policy, you might be able to make an exception for the right tenant. If you have questions about whether or not your landlord allows pets, ask ahead of time so there aren't any surprises later on down the road.
