How to make Fly - Trapping Ventilated Improved Pit ( VIP) Latrine.

(1) A slab is made in the same way as for the closed latrine, but it should be made a little larger, and with two holes in it, one for the latrine opening and the other for a ventilation pipe.

(2) Dig the shallow (7 cm .) pit, but make it 2 meters square. Put in the grid of wire mesh or ' expanded metal'. Cut two holes .in it with a hack- saw, one of about 20 cm. Size, centered 1/2 meter from one edge, and the other about 15 cm. centred 3/4 meter from the opposite edge. Stand an old bucket or large pot in the 20 cm. hole and a smaller pot in the 15 cm. hole.
Pour the cement, and continue to make as for the closed latrine slab

(3) Dig the round latrine out in the the same way but larger, 1¹/² meters wide and 3 meters deep. Make a collar of small concrete bricks around the top of the pit, level with the surface ground. When the slab is dry, place it over the pit, with the 20 cm. hole towards the equator, the sunniest side.

(4) Build a vent- pipe over the larger hole, 2 ³/⁴ to 3 meters high, and an out-house over the rest of the slab, using whatever materials are available. The picture shows one made if 10 cm. bricks, or concrete blocks. There should be no windows on the out- house, and the door opening should have an extra wall in front to stop too much light entering. The roof covering should fit tightly, so that the out- house is relatively dark inside.

(5) The top of the vent-pipe should be covered with a piece of aluminum or stainless steel mosquito gauze, tied firmly in lace. The pipe should be painted black. The latrine opening on the slab should not be cover.

Note: The vent-pipe is the important addition yo this type of latrine. It absorbs heat from the sun, and air rises in it to carry away any smells. Air is drawn into the pit through the latrine hole - hence the need to keep it open. Files can get into the pit too, and may breed, but when they try yo get out they will be attracted by the light from the vent- pipe through the larger hole , rather than by the smaller hole and the dark out-house. Reaching the top of the vent-pipe the flies meet the mosquito gauze, cannot get out, and die. So no flies, no smell, and no need for a cover on the slab.

Is this interesting and helpful?
