Landing a job offer is thrilling but you want to accept properly to start the relationship with your new employer on the right foot. Follow these 8 steps:
1. Thank the Interviewer
Thank the person who extended the offer and share your enthusiasm. Express appreciation for the opportunity and their time during the interview process.
Example: “Thank you so much, John. I’m very excited to receive this offer from Acme Company...”
2. Confirm The Details
Politely ask them to review all the key details - position, start date, compensation, benefits, etc. Make sure you align on every component and get any agreed upon specifics in writing if not already.
3. Request Time To Consider
Even if you plan to accept, ask for 1-2 days to review the offer with family. This demonstrates you are carefully weighing the opportunity. Plus, it gives you any time needed to complete step 4.
4. Compare With Other Offers
If you have multiple offers, compare all aspects after receiving this new one. Analyze the pros and cons of each based on job duties, growth potential, salary, perks, culture fit and other factors important to you.
5. Formally Accept
Contact the employer by your agreed decision date to formally accept the offer. Share again that you are thrilled about the new opportunity.
Example: “After reviewing the details and comparing with other opportunities, I am delighted to accept the offer for the Associate Marketing Manager role at Acme Company. Thank you, I look forward to starting on July 1st.”
6. Resign From Current Position
Submit a formal letter of resignation to your current employer. Make the transition smooth by offering to document processes, introduce your replacement etc.
7. Complete Onboarding Paperwork
Expect a packet of paperwork to formally join the company - tax forms, benefits enrollment, employee handbook acknowledgement etc. Complete required documents promptly. Ask about start details.
8. Mark Your Calendar
Record your start date and any key first-week meetings on your calendar. Plan your schedule to give proper notice to current commitments.
