Born and bred in Nigeria, I can proudly say that I am a real African blood. We have our ways of doing things and some of our ways are sometimes surprising albeit effective and efficient. One trend I have observed in Nigeria and Africa as a whole is the lack of professionalism in jobs. In my country, anyone can do anything at all. Let me start with the medical field. Almost anyone that owns a drugstore whether formally trained or not can that disease. The banking sector? Engineers, agriculturists, and other disciplines are working in the bank and carrying out core banking activities.
The educational sector is not any different. As an agric graduate, I have taught English, social studies, and other nonrelated subjects. The entertainment sector is not an exception. Everyone is a DJ. It is not a good thing. It waters down these professions. What can we do to achieve professionalism where core professionals are made to work in their professions?
