Humans are social animals and they want shared experiences which in itself is not a bad thing. But it becomes a huge problem when a person stretches beyond his ability financially to have the same experience the other person had. Keeping up with the Joneses or the Fear of Missing Out is an impulse spending habit that has crippled the financial life of a lot of people and has also killed wealth potentials.

We desire the vacation our friend posted on Instagram. We want to wear the same dress our clique of friends are wearing so that they would not know that you don't have. We want to have a society wedding because our friend's wedding was a talk of the town. But the vital question we should ask ourselves when we want to be financially reckless with Fear of Missing Out is if we want to run our own financial race or we want to run the financial race of that person we want to impress.
